We insert thick leafy bamboo poles (freshly cut from time-to-time in the surrounding forest) from the top of the outdoor enclosure through the ceiling bars, dig them into the ground, secure the bottom part in the dirt and tie them together with ropes at Kumamoto Sanctuary, Wildlife Research Center, Kyoto University (KS).
The bamboo sun shades provide highly desired shady spots on hot sunny days. Chimps usually avoid direct sun light. Using these leafy bamboo poles we manage to increase shady areas, give them a chance to climb on instable poles like trees in the forest. Chimpanzees can enjoy using the entire enclosure all day long.
